Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Nutrition)

The Division of Nutrition, USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center (CNRC), in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine seeks applicants for an appointment at the Assistant Professor (tenure-track).

 

Scientists in the CNRC work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with an ultimate mission to promote the nutritional health of children, and prenatal and lactating women. CNRC investigators use a wide range of model systems (yeasts, plants, mice, rats, piglets, and humans) to unravel the fundamental biology in the broad areas of nutrition, metabolism, and development, investigate the behavioral pathways that contribute to obesity or poorly controlled metabolism among children, and assess approaches for promoting adequate nutrition or preventing and treating obesity among children. We seek outstanding scientists to join the CNRC who can bring in complementary research programs (either clinical or basic) and advance the CNRC mission.

Job Duties

  • Demonstrate research productivity by publication in peer reviewed journals, proposal submission and grantsmanship, presentations at professional meetings that are commensurate with experience, and involvement in professional organizations.

  • Work to obtain internal or external funding to support research and establish a robust research group.  

  • Contribute to advancement of the profession by sharing specialty expertise through research publication and presentations at professional meetings.

  • Teaching of graduate students and/or medical students as a CNRC faculty member who participates in the BCM medical student nutrition courses, or for miscellaneous individualized teaching activities within the Department of Pediatrics.

  • Develop original research techniques and applications required for ongoing research projects.

  • Plans, directs, and conducts original research experiments.

 

Minimum Qualifications
M.D., D.V.M., and/or Ph.D. degree and demonstrated evidence of commitment to scholarly activity and outstanding scientific accomplishments.

Faculty Position in Exercise Medicine

 

Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Virginia Tech

 

Virginia Tech seeks to recruit an innovative researcher in the area of exercise medicine with a focus on the impact on metabolism, obesity, and cardiovascular function for a tenure track faculty position at the assistant professor level. The successful candidate should address issues of the health effects of exercise on cardio metabolic function either during development in childhood and/or throughout the adult lifespan with a focus on the cellular, molecular and organ systems’ effects of exercise. Investigators who focus on mechanistic understanding of the effects of exercise in human subjects and/or laboratory animal models are encouraged to apply. Investigators with innovative genetic, biochemical and physiological approaches that may be applied in humans and/or animal models are welcomed. The person hired for this position will join 38 other faculty led teams at the research institute and will join the new FBRI Center for Exercise Medicine Research (CEMR). The position will be located at the FBRI at VTC (https://research.vtc.vt.edu) on the university’s health sciences campus in Roanoke, Virginia. In addition to the original 100,000 square foot research institute that opened in 2010, a new adjacent 139,000 square foot research building (http://fralinbiomed.info/buildingtour) opened this past year in which the new faculty member will have their research programs. The new CEMR is immediately adjacent to the research laboratories of the FBRI Center for Vascular and Heart Research, offering additional opportunities for collaborations that span metabolism, cardiovascular science and exercise medicine research. Facilities at the research institute include two human whole room calorimeters, metabolic kitchen and dining areas for the study of human nutrition and eating behaviors, multiple research MRIs for human and animal research including high field MR guided PET and MR guided focused ultrasound, multiple cellular/molecular imaging facilities including spinning disc confocal microscopy, standard laser scanning confocal microscopy, scanning block face electron microscopy, super resolution microscopy as well biochemical and molecular biology cores including Mass Spec as well as behavioral testing suites for animals and humans.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in developmental psychology, biopsychology, neuroscience, or related biomedical field, and a demonstrated record of accomplishment of research productivity. The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain a high-quality, extramurally-funded research program and participate in research mentoring of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students with some teaching in graduate programs.
